May 2009 Small business finance A new business course, delivered entirely online, has been made available for release by Elgin-based training company Mycourse. The course aims to show how anyone working with a small business can improve skills in financial control, from basic book-keeping to VAT and Payroll. The training company has been developing the course over a period of several months and it has now recently been accredited by one of the UK's professional bodies for the book-keeping profession, the Institute of Certified Book-keepers. Releasing the course today. Jim Chambers of Mycourse said: " Research has shown that two of the principle causes of small business failure are a lack of skills or knowledge of Finance and Marketing. This course helps to address the first - finance and starts with developing skills in book-keeping. It then moves on to provide an understanding of how VAT works and finally the requirements for running an accurate payroll for when a business starts to employ help. The course is delivered entirely online and so can be studied in small chunks whenever a person has time - and wherever they can access an internet connection." Mycourse was the first in the UK to offer a similar course online in 2004. This led to the company extending its online provision, by use of a learning management system, for which it won a national award at a learning profession conference in 2007. A follow-on course, designed to develop more advanced management skills which will be released later in 2009. Lesley Smith was awarded the status after Learndirect Scotland heard of her achievements in learning over the last few years. Learning has helped Lesley Smith from Elgin to have a new and exciting career change after giving up work to look after her two children. Lesley always had a keen interest in book-keeping since taking it as a subject at secondary school, but due to having to travel around with her father’s work she was not able to continue her studies. Then, when she got married and went to live in Germany she decided to put her career plans on hold until her children were older. But after moving to Elgin five years ago she decided to return to college, where she completed an HNC in Business Administration and an NQ in Accounting. Lesley felt that she wanted to further her book-keeping knowledge and contacted her local learndirect scotland learning centre - Mycourse Training. There she took the first of five courses through distant learning. Her part time job at a local hotel also meant that learning this way was ideal. Lesley said: “After completing the first book-keeping course, Mycourse contacted me to see if I would be interested in doing some part time work for them helping out other students that were doing courses through distant learning as I knew what it consisted of and the discipline needed to learn this way. “Now two years on, I work at Mycourse four days a week tutoring other students in book-keeping and payroll and I have completed all my book-keeping exams. I am now studying for a diploma in Small Business.” All the years that Lesley didn’t work she continued to keep her skills up by doing the ECDL and various computing and word processing classes mostly through distance learning and attending part time classes. Lesley added: “The knowledge I have gained though studying through learndirect scotland has also helped me to further my knowledge of payroll and self assessment and after all these years I am finally doing a job I thoroughly enjoy.” Lesley has since passed her latest course - the Diploma in Small Business Financial Management. Jim Chambers, Director of Mycourse said: "We're very proud of Lesley and her achievements in learning, all of which is helping her in her work and I would urge any small business to encourage their employees to take training and development seriously as there are clear benefits to both the employer and the learner. Further information, including details of local courses and learning providers is available from the learndirect Scotland website www.learndirectscotland.com January 2008Mycourse teams up with book-keeping body The Elgin-based training company has today become accredited by the Institute of Certified Book-keepers (ICB) to deliver their book-keeping qualifications. Mycourse Training approached the body late in 2007 with a view to offering their range of book-keeping qualifications alongside their existing provision. Jim Chambers of Mycourse said "the ICB offers an introductory level award in basic book-keeping which a client can study at home but more importantly take an examination at home also. This means that it is a great entry to the industry for those that fear not only examinations but taking on something new." The training company is developing further training manuals to guide study towards higher level book-keeping and computerised book-keeping which it sees as an important development of its distance learning operation. A Moray-based IT and training company, Mycourse Ltd won Best Practice award in the category 'Enhancing learning through technology' at the national learning centre conference held at the Radisson Hotel, Glasgow (12 March 2007). The conference is the annual meeting of 500 learning centres across Scotland, hosted by Learndirect Scotland and the category was one of 10 created to help disseminate best practice within the industry. There were three centres nominated for each category and one was chosen by their industry peers after a 15 minute presentation by each. Jim Chambers, Director of Mycourse said "It was a great honour to win the award, which is testament to the very hard work carried out by just the four of us employed here at Mycourse. Being an IT company we like to think we were at the forefront of technology but we also make good use of it to help deliver our training programmes. It is very encouraging to know that we are leaders in the field in Scotland - a small provider, still able to compete with the larger colleges and universities. " The company outlined how it made use of a Learning Management System (LMS) and a Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) to manage the learning process, from initial enrolment to managing the ongoing communications and support for clients, to clinch the award. "The beautiful glass award will take pride-of-place at the entrance to our learning centre and I hope that there are more to come, as we feel we are innovative in the way we do business and deliver learning. The UK has changed significantly in the way people work and study over the last ten years and we believe that many and in particular small businesses, recognise the value of training - it's just that they don't often have the time in the normal working year to study and develop. New ways of learning need to be developed to ease the process of getting into training and personal development. We are always looking for practical solutions to help address these issues" says Jim.

7 October 2006Local company qualifies as Microsoft specialist
Mycourse has today qualified as a 'Microsoft Small Business Specialist' which will enable the company to act as a Microsoft IT Consultant to small business.
The new status means that the company joins only a small number of Microsoft specialists in the Moray area. It has been working towards the goal for some time, with company IT specialist Rob Cowan, having to study and pass very difficult exams to help towards achieving the qualification.
Jim Chambers, Director said "Rob already has wide experience working with small to large computer networks in previous posts before coming to us but with a large number of small businesses in the area, it made sense to concentrate on IT issues specific to this market. He now has the knowledge to guide businesses through the software licensing maze to ensure that businesses are operating their systems within the law and to make cost-effective use of the software licences available to them - very often, his advice can make savings for the company. More importantly we can point out applications that could improve productivity or enable a business to expand or enter new markets. He has managed to pick up a lot of detailed information in a small space of time and I have to give him credit for achieving so much for us"
The company started out as a training business, offering IT training such as the popular ECDL but latterly started training IT technicians. It seems that it is now being recognised locally as offering a valued IT installation and support service. Many will recognise the popular PC CLINIC in Wards Road where a dead PC can often be miraculously revived.
Jim says "the IT market is changing almost on a daily basis. The days when small traders can offer computers at a competitive price are virtually over as the large supermarket chains move in with low-price but low-featured computers. We have to move towards offering a better quality of product and service and we believe that many people will still opt for equipment that will not break down 1 month after the warranty period expires. Businesses in particular need reliable IT equipment and software and we have opted to use reputable manufacturers such as Microsoft, IBM and Fujitsu-Siemens. Where we cannot find the quality required, we will source components and build our own equipment. Whilst Moray may be fairly remote from the big cities of the central belt, there is no reason why businesses here can not benefit from the same service demanded by businesses down there"
Mycourse can now expect to receive referrals from Microsoft as a result of achieving the new status knowing that he company can offer best advice on system design and installation for a small business.

Carolyn Charman, who is now enjoying a career as a successful book-keeper, has scooped an award at the National Business Enterprise Awards in London. After starting her own book-keeping business she enrolled on an elearning course through Elgin based training company, Mycourse Ltd, to further her studies and be able to confidently provide more services to her clients.
The award for Bookkeeper of the Year 2006 (Runner-Up - Highly Commended) at the National Business Enterprise Awards, was presented at an awards ceremony held at The House of Commons.
Carolyn who hails from Woking in Surrey said “Having previously attained book-keeping qualifications by studying in my spare time, I was accepted into membership of two of the major book-keeping professional bodies in the UK and then started my own business as a book-keeper, offering my services to businesses in my area. Being keen to consolidate my previous learning and gain some new skills in financial analysis, I subsequently enrolled on the internet-based course developed by Mycourse Training for the Diploma in Small Business Financial Management – the course was perfect for building confidence in one’s own abilities and the personal support provided by the tutors was excellent. I was initially a little concerned that further studying would be too onerous. However, this online course enabled me to fit my studies around all my other commitments and I was able to progress at my own pace. The course was easy to follow and, although some of the modules were more challenging than others, there was plenty of support and I would definitely recommend it. I have never really looked back and my business is now thriving. There are many hard-working and dedicated bookkeepers out there and although bookkeeping is essentially a back-office function, occasionally we do get recognised and rewarded! I have received an incredible amount of support and encouragement over the years and I believe this award is a testament not just to my hard work but to the help and positive attitude of everyone who has helped me along the way. I now work with several prestigious clients across a variety of different industries and I also hope to be able to offer support to other bookkeepers lacking in confidence and experience.”
The online learning course developed by Mycourse is the only one in the UK that provides training towards the IAB Diploma. Jim Chambers of the company said “We are very pleased for Carolyn. Her work was of a standard that we had not seen before and we suspected that she would go far. She has every right to the award and we have no doubt that she will do well in her chosen career. We congratulate her efforts.”
The Business Enterprise Awards are organised by IAB Qualifications for Business in association with leading organisations such as Business Link, HM Revenue & Customs, FA Simms, Lloyds TSB, Intuit Quickbooks and Belmont International. Now in its eighth year, the prestigious awards ceremony gives national recognition across a variety of sectors to the outstanding achievements of men and women within the SME sector. It has proved incredibly popular within the business world and this year attracted a record number of nominations. Nominations were then short-listed and finalists had to attend an interview with the final judging panel in London in March.
IAB's chief executive, J Malcolm Dean said "The continued success of the awards has shown how important it is to recognise the efforts of key people working within the small business sector"

It was top marks for Mark Pilkington who studied for professional book-keeping examinations, gaining Distinction at each level, in preparation for a new business venture.
Mark who has enjoyed a career in the Royal Air Force, recently as part of the Search and Rescue provision at RAF Kinloss, flying as a Captain with the Nimrod aircraft is to enter retirement and wanted to start a business offering services to the business community in Moray. He decided that he needed some formal qualifications in order for his clients to feel confident with his standard of work. He chose to study book-keeping through Mycourse Training based in Elgin, as there was a recognised demand for these services to small business operators in the area.
Mark said : “ I have enjoyed working with accounts in the past and wanted to return to this on completion of my service with the RAF. I know that research suggests that one of the main reasons for the failure of small businesses is a lack of skills in finance. With the added pressure on business owners to comply with new legislation affecting payroll and tax returns, I felt sure that there is a local need for supporting business owners with a service to help them reduce the cost of compliance and the time spent in making sure they don’t fall foul of the law.”
Jim Chambers, Director of Mycourse said “Mark’s performance in the examinations was amazing, although not entirely unexpected as his approach to study was truly dedicated and his work, always very exacting. To gain a Distinction at each level of examination shows the amount of work that he did to gain the necessary knowledge. He will provide a great service to small business operators who are looking to free up time to concentrate on running their business and we wish him all the best”
Mark has completed work experience with a local firm of accountants and was recently appointed as Treasurer of the local Moray Entrepreneurs group. He is in a position to offer a full book-keeping and payroll service including help with submission of personal and small business tax returns. Known as Hempriggs Business Services Ltd., he has already recruited his first clients and looks sure to quickly build a successful business.

Turning a hobby into a new career has paid off for Darren Stoker of RAF Kinloss.
Darren who has built and repaired computers for friends and family for some time decided that it was time to go for a recognised qualification. He is due to leave the RAF shortly and recognising that his skills may not be suitable for finding work elsewhere, he had to think what he may like to do in the future. Having enjoyed building computers in his spare time, working with Information Technology (IT) soon became an obvious choice.
Being the first student to complete the CompTIA A+ Computer Technician course at Mycourse Training in Elgin, he said ” I found the course an enjoyable and friendly experience, attending on a Saturday morning and occasionally on a Thursday evening - the centre also has a PC Clinic where the general public can bring their ailing PCs for repair, providing the students with some hands-on experience which I believe is second to none” Darren is now keen to learn more and is moving on to a two week intensive course in England where he will learn about configuring and installing computer networks.
Jim Chambers, a director at Mycourse said; “as the price of computer equipment has been dropping steadily over the last year or two, this has brought the price of computer servers and network equipment into the budget of the even smallest business – they’re now investing heavily, so that they can share data and deal with suppliers and customers using the internet. Darren’s work on the course was outstanding. He faces a lucrative career in his chosen line of work and we wish him all the best”.
The investment in IT has led to a growing demand for people with the right technical skills for maintaining these systems. Research suggests that the UK is facing a growing IT skills gap and by 2008 will be short of around 40,000 people with networking technology skills and the earning potential of those in the industry now looks very promising. Darren is very pleased that he started tinkering with his computer, which has provided a stepping stone into work, just when he needs it most ENDS

6 October 2005Local training company is awarded test centre status Mycourse Training based in Elgin, Moray has become one of only a few centres in Scotland to meet the rigorous standards for delivery of computer-based testing for the global company, Pearson VUE.
The location of the centre in Moray means that for many, a long trip to Glasgow for testing can now be avoided and the company is well-placed for candidates from the two nearby RAF bases who are studying towards industry-based qualifications for companies such as Microsoft, Cisco and Macromedia.
Jim Chambers of Mycourse said; “we wanted to test our own clients studying for the CompTIA A+ computer technician qualification but were initially turned down by Pearson VUE as a test centre. We have since worked hard and invested in new equipment in order to meet the standards required for secure computer-based testing and we’re very pleased to have now achieved this new status. Bookings are already coming in and we expect to be busy over the coming months. The facility also means that our own clients can now take their IT tests close to home. We have also provided a facility for booking tests directly online from our website – available 24 hrs a day.”
The training company has come a long way since opening in 2002 and now offers a range of courses from book-keeping through to IT technical. It is also well-known for its e.learning courses developed in-house which are followed by clients from across the UK .

Val Ross from Forres, who recently completed a newly developed computing course for beginners has discovered that she is the first in Moray to have passed. The equalskills course run in conjunction with the British Computer Society is aimed at people who are just starting out with computers and want to know how to create simple documents and to access the internet and perhaps send messages by email. Val said “ This was the first course I have passed since leaving school and I felt a great sense of achievement when told that I had gained the award, I was really pleased with myself - three weeks later, I’m so proud that I still can’t stop smiling about it. I realise that now I’m quite good at this and have enrolled for a further IT course. The trainers Jacky and Sharon were so relaxed and friendly about everything that I didn’t feel as if I was on a course, everything just progressed smoothly without any stress. It has been a great boost for my confidence and self-belief and I now have a new computer that I am putting to good use. Computers are found in almost every facet of life - even attending the gym needs a little knowledge as systems there are becoming computerised and I can now leave messages for my instructor at Moray Leisure Centre for example. I recommend this course for anyone who may be a little nervous about the technology as I find that it is more user friendly than I had imagined. It took me just 4 weeks to work though it” Sharon Chambers of Mycourse Training based in Wards Road, Elgin who delivers the course says “It was really good to see Val complete the new equalskills programme, she was obviously over-the-moon about it at the time and it wasn’t until we sent the results through to the British Computer Society that we found out that Val was the first in Moray to achieve the award, of which we are also very proud.” Victoria Reinthal of the British Computer Society commented: “We are delighted and encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by Val in completing equalskills. The qualification was designed with people like Val in mind; those initially intimidated by computers, yet after some basic training, can see the many benefits using computers competently can bring. Congratulations to Val!” Moray New Futures which works with people who may have barriers to employment or training referred Val to Mycourse for the training so that she could develop her computer skills

Richard is first to complete new online DiplomaRichard Cross has become the first to complete the Diploma in Small Business Financial Management a course which is accredited by the International Association of Book-keepers (IAB) and provided by Mycourse Limited based in Elgin, N.E. Scotland. Richard who lives near Huntly in Aberdeenshire recently completed his tour of duty at the RAF and chose to follow a programme of study that included the diploma and other modules in sage accounting software, with a view to taking up a new career in the field. Mycourse are the only training provider in the UK who have developed the course for delivery entirely by e.learning. With some 60 - 100 hours of content, it was a major development for the company. Jim Chambers of Mycourse said "We are very proud of Richard and his achievement. He has worked very hard to complete the course over a period of only a few weeks. As he lived within an hours drive of our training centre, we saw quite a lot of him and he provided very useful feedback to us about the course content, as he was studying. We are sure that with his new skills, he will have no trouble in finding work anywhere in the UK. We have several other clients following the course from London to Edinburgh who are also due to complete and the feedback so far is excellent. Richard said "I found the course a real eye-opener - the course started with basic book-keeping and continued with payroll, taxation and financial analysis. I now know that the entrepreneur has a lot to contend with when they embark on a new business. I hope that I can provide a book-keeping service to keep them on track. I also found that it was really useful to be able to follow the course online, as I live in a remote area which can be badly affected by snow in the winter months. It meant that I could continue my study at any time I liked. The Diploma course consists of eight modules: Basic Records; VAT; Payroll; Final Accounts; Taxation; Costing and Pricing; Working Capital Management; Financial Planning and Control. It is assessed by the submission of an assignment for each module. March 4 2004Blended Learning Centre development complete.Mycourse Limited received an award of funding in January of this year to develop a 'Blended Learning Centre' that would address shortages of skills in key business areas, in the Moray and NE Scotland region. Jim and Sharon Chambers, Directors of Mycourse are now the proud owners of the new centre that will provide a crucial service to the Small to Medium sized Enterprise (SME). The building work was carried out to professional standards using local firms and on schedule. New IT equipment has been installed and the first businesses have already completed training using the new facilities. The project makes use of the extensive catalogue of e.learning courses provided by Learndirect Scotland but reinforces clients' learning using a series of short workshops or seminars. Jim Chambers says: " we recognised that in the past, e.learning gained a reputation for being a less-effective way of training in new skills. However, research from the US and in the UK suggests that when combined with close tutor support or workshops, it is highly valued - giving the client an opportunity to discuss their learning with someone qualified in the field. We believe that many of our business clients can rarely afford their employees to be away from the workplace for too long. This solution provides a much more flexible way to deliver effective training. " Further information about the company and its facilities can be gained by contacting Jim Chambers at 0845 862 0608 or call in at the premises in Wards Road, Elgin for a coffee and a chat.

January 2004Learndirect awards funding for new developmentIn late 2003 a call for funding was made by Learndirect Scotland to learning centres in Scotland for innovative projects. Mycourse was interested in targeting the SME (Small to Medium sized Enterprise) market in the Moray region, for which research had shown that there were skill gaps that were difficult to address. The project was to develop a 'Blended Learning' centre that would provide a range of online courses, backed up by workshops or seminars to reinforce the learning. The online courses could be accessed at our premises or at the employer's through the provision of laptops, that could be easily set up to access the internet. It also offers a range of learning options to members of the public who are keen to increase their confidence and skills in a range of subjects. I am impressed that the company places emphasis on the internet and e.learning as an option to study, as many businesses have less and less time for training, preferring perhaps, small 'bite-size' chunks of learning" Jim Chambers, Director of Mycourse said "This achievement really does mean a lot to us because it will give us the opportunity to better serve the local and wider communities by the provision of a greater range of courses. We have also developed interactive training courses of our own for a popular range of accounting software and we hope to use the Learndirect Scotland, Learning Management System - 'Skillnet' to make the courses available to the rest of Scotland and beyond."
